After watching and listening to the news about the disastrous earthquake and tsunami in Japan, it seems almost frivilous to write about classroom developments. But life goes on, it will go on for the Japanese people too, though I can't imagine it will ever be the same.
The catastrophe made one thing clear: we are so insignificant.
We strive to modernise, educate, improve. We want the most modern tools, the most advanced technology, the best educational practices.
But then things like tsunamis and earthquakes happen. What nation is more advanced than Japan? Yet they were powerless to do anything about the earthquake or tsuanami.
The whole scenario makes me reevaluate what I am doing with my life and in my work. Am I building something that will last in eternity? Could a split-second take everything away because I built on sand? I know I'm using best-practices in teaching language arts and math. But am I doing enough to teach my students about building for God's kingdom; am I doing enough to teach them about salvation?
If a huge catastrophe took away what I've worked for, what would be left? Would there be hope? The hope that comes from the knowledge of salvation in Jesus Christ. The only building that will endure. It is all that will ever matter.
And we can choose what we build on.
