When I see these grapes, I'm reminded of one of my grade one students.
Why?
I picked a pailful of beautiful grapes in fall. However, I believe it was Butch who planted them for us, and it was Butch who pruned them for us this year. I would come home and see a neat pile of pruned vines in the soil of the flower garden and know he had visited. Well, actually I helped to grow them too, I hoed them... and watered them... sometimes.
How does this connect to my student?
We were working on story vines in school. The students had done a plan where they were supposed to draw an object that reminded them of a person who connected them to the past. This boy chose his dad and he also drew a plan.
But his plan didn't quite work out. I had to PULL information from him - some idea that would work on the vine. I got him started and went to work with other students, very frequently coming back to him. After much cajoling, coercing and prompting, he finished his vine by the end of class. As he was hanging it up on the bulletin board, I heard him remark, seriously, laconically, "I knew I would get it done on time."
I also knew I would harvest grapes in fall.
